abstract

zein is one of the best biopolymer for edible film making and sugars are natural plasticizers for biopolymers. in this research, sugars (fructose, galactose and glucose) at three levels (0.5, 0.7, 1 g/g of zein) were used as plasticizers for zein protein films and their water vapor permeability (wvp), oxygen permeability (op) and atomic force microscopy (afm) topography were studied. the pure zein films had the highest wvp and adding sugars to 0.7 g/g of zein decreased wvp of the films. in comparison among different zein films, those plasticized by galactose and fructose had the highest and lowest barrier properties, respectively. the zein films without plasticizer had low op and increasing plasticizers to 0.5 g/g of zein decreased op values in all samples. the films containing galactose and fructose had the lowest and highest op, respectively. afm images were used to evaluate surface topography (a qualitative parameter) and roughness (a quantitative parameter) of the zein films. the films plasticized by fructose had smoother surface and lower roughness than the other films. interrelation between wvp, op and the roughness of zein films were not observed.

Atomic force microscopy analysis of rat pulmonary surfactant films.

Pulmonary surfactant facilitates breathing by forming a surface tension reducing film at the air-liquid interface of the alveoli. The objective was to characterize the structure of surfactant films using endogenous rat surfactant. Solid-support surfactant films, at different surface pressures, were obtained using a Langmuir balance and were analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The results sh...

Exploring mechanism of xanthate adsorption on chalcopyrite surface: An atomic force microscopy study

In this work, adsorption of the potassium amyl xanthate collector on the pure chalcopyrite surface was studied by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorption experiments were carried out at different concentrations of the collector and at diverse pH values in the presence or absence of exterior ions. The changes occurring in the surface morphology of chalcopyrite due to the collector...

Surface Morphological Study of J-Aggregate Thin Films by Atomic Force Microscopy

Molecular aggregates formed by polymethine dyes in solutions, at surfaces, and in crystals can be used to modulate the intensity and wavelength of light absorption.1 The applications for such dye aggregates are manifold: photography, xerography, photovoltaic, molecular photonic, and microelectronic devices.2 The internal structure of such aggregates is widely perceived as arrays of tightly pack...

Sensitivity Analysis of Frequency Response of Atomic Force Microscopy in Liquid Environment on Cantilever's Geometrical Parameters

In this paper, the non-linear dynamic response of rectangular atomic force microscopy in tapping mode is considered. The effect of cantilever’s geometrical parameters (e.g., cantilever length, width, thickness, tip length and the angle between the cantilever and the sample's surface in liquid environment has been studied by taking into account the interaction forces. Results indicate that the r...

Analysis of intraocular lens surface properties with atomic force microscopy.

PURPOSE To analyze the surface optics of 4 currently available intraocular lenses (IOLs) with atomic force microscopy. SETTING Licryl Laboratory, University of Calabria, Rende, Italy. METHODS The surface roughness and topography of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), silicone, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic acrylic IOLs were evaluated with atomic force microscopy in contact mode. The analysis w...
